UNDERSTANDING DOPAMINE AND HOW TO GET AN ADEQUATE AMOUNT

Happy Monday! Today we are going to talk about dopamine.

What is dopamine?

Dopamine one of the “happy hormones” but more specifically, dopamine is a neurotransmitter that our bodies produce naturally. It helps with our focus, how we feel pleasure, motivation, sleep, mood, heart rate, kidney function, ect... Sometimes our bodies don't get enough or get too much and this is when it becomes a health problem. These health problems might be physical or they could be mental. Most often mental health struggles have a relation to getting too much or too little dopamine. Too much might cause aggression, addiction, anxiety, and even stress. Too little might cause depression, moodiness, tiredness, and make you unmotivated. Now that we understand a little bit about dopamine and its effects, you might be wondering how you can get an adequate amount of dopamine to increase your health, mentally and physically. Today we are going to teach you a few ways that will aid in getting the right amount of dopamine in the body. So let's get to it!

A few ways that will aid in getting the right amount of dopamine in the body

  1. Getting an adequate amount of sleep(Around 9 hours)

  2. Exercising multiple times a week or even daily

  3. Taking walks in sunshine (The sunshine part of this is important!)

  4. Spending time outdoors

  5. Yoga or stretching

  6. Mediation before bed or when you wake up

  7. Listening to music whenever you can (this could be while walking, while outside, while you clean, or get ready, ect...)

  8. Getting a balanced diet (fruits, veggies, proteins, water, ect...)

All of these things will help keep your dopamine levels balanced and help get enough dopamine into the body. These might look very similar to the habits that increase mental health and that's because they are. As we said before, the majority of mental health disorders stem from a lack of dopamine or too much dopamine in the body, so trying to fix dopamine is very similar to trying to fix your mental health in general.
