The author, Jennifer Niven wrote, "We do not remember days, we remember moments" in her book, All the Bright Places. And it so true, we recall memories of certain moments not entire days. The times we savored moments, maybe without even realizing, are the ones we recall and cherish. It is easy to fall into a state of being alive rather than living. Savoring moments is a way to help you get out of that state. Savoring moments is such an important thing to know how to do because it helps you live in the moment and express positive emotions like gratitude which helps your bodily health and mental health.
4 simple ways to start savoring the moments
Practice gratitude: Take a few minutes when you wake up or before bed to write down a few things you are grateful for and why. Practicing gratitude can subconsciously teach your mind to move things from your head to your heart. It also practices one of the healthiest emotions and helps you not take things for granted like moments. The less moments we take for granted the more moments we will savor.
Smile: When you feel happy you smile. Well it actually works the other way around too. When you smile, you can make yourself feel happier. The happier you feel in them moment the more likely you will savor and appreciate the moment you are in.
Tap into your senses: Find the small sensory details and remember those and how they make you feel. For example the color of the sky above you or the feeling of the grass below you. Finding and focusing on these senses you feel can help you savor, remember, and recall moments you experience.
Act Out-loud: Expressing those moments where you are in pure happiness out-loud, feeds your mind with evidence of your emotions. An example of how to do this is literally jump for joy or scream it out as loud as possible. Even laughing is a piece of proof to your mind that you are happy. The more proof you give your mind that you are in a happy state the more likely your mind will savor that moment of happiness.
These are just a few easy ways to start savoring the moments. Remember, it is easy to fall into a state of being alive instead of living but that doesn't mean it should stay that way.
