It's the end of the month and that means it is a perfect time to do a routine clean up. One thing that is really important to clean at least every month is makeup brushes. Cleaning makeup brushes is a key step in skin care. After a while, makeup brushes start to build up bacteria and dirt from the left over makeup. This build up can cause acne breakouts and is really harmful for the skin. Depending on how often you wear makeup and your skin type, you might need to clean out your brushes more than once a month. Unfortunately, like makeup, the makeup cleansers that are most popular contain chemicals so here are a few natural options for cleansers and how to clean your brushes.
HOW TO CLEAN YOUR BRUSHES
WET ALL YOUR BRUSHES: When wetting your brushes, turn on a sink to a medium temp (not too hot because it will damage the brush) and place the bristles under the water. It is important to have the bristles facing downwards or else your bristles might end up falling out or thinning due to water damaging the glue.
CLEANSER: Add your cleanser to a cleaning mat or to your palm. Turn on the sink again and swirl the brush around with medium pressure until the bristles are all cleaned (the bristles should be back to original color) This step might need to be repeated a few times until the brush is fully cleaned. Scroll down for natural cleanser options.
DRYING THE BRUSHES: To begin with, you should squeeze all the excess water out of the brush to ensure that there is no damage the brush. Then set out a towel and let the brushes be air dried flat on the towel. Whatever you do, make sure the brushes are dried flat so that your bristles don't fall out. (This takes a few hours, so plan accordingly if you are in need of the brushes)
NATURAL CLEANSER OPTIONS
Castile soap- This is a natural, oil based soap. This type of soap is great for brush cleaning because it has no chemicals and it doesn't damage the brush. A common brand to get this from is Dr. Bronner's.
Apple cider vinegar and natural dish soap- Apple cider vinegar is known for killing off bad bacterias so it is perfect for makeup brush cleaning. For this you can simply combine the two evenly in a bowl and use to clean the brush.
Your current face cleaner- This is a great option because you know your face won't break out from it and it is already cleaning the bacteria and dirt from you face. And if you already use a natural cleaner then it is a bonus.
Non-scented bar soap- A bar soap can do the trick but it is important that it is non-scented because the fragrance might react with your skin and cause more skin issues. For this you can simply swirl the brushes along the bar instead of on your palm or a cleaning mat.
Natural baby shampoo- Baby shampoo is gentler than regular shampoo so it doesn't damage the brush. And just like the bar soap method, make sure you do not have any fragrances in the shampoo. One option is Dr. Bronner's unscented baby.
Overall, the main things of importance are making sure you wash your brushes often enough, making sure you hold the bristles down when washing and drying, and not using fragrances in your cleansers. One more thing we would like to add is that you should also include your sponges and any other tools you use, like eyelash curlers, when washing your brushes. We hope this blog post was helpful for you and that you are able to use these steps and tips when washing your brushes! Happy Monday everyone!
